How is it ant season again already?? No matter, you’ve decided you want to be more proactive this spring by keeping household and yard pests in check, especially those pesky ants.Well, you've found the right place! Check out these 5 tips on how to best leverage Maggie’s Farm No Spill Ant Kill to get rid of ants in your home and prevent them from coming inside! What is Maggie’s Farm No Spill Ant Kill, anyway? No Spill Ant Kill is a high-moisture borax bait, made with a patented rigid gel formulation (the consistency of gelatin); it doesn’t spill or drip. Borax is a natural mineral ingredient used in many common household products, including soap and laundry detergent. No Spill Ant Kill’s high-moisture gel remains rigid in temperatures up to 130 °F, which is a big deal. This means that even on high heat days, ants can walk on top of and feed off of the gel bait (even many ants at a time!) without drowning in the formulation like they do in liquid baits. No Spill Ant Kill is effective on common household ants per the product label. Confidently use it in your home, business, and at school, as well as in daycare and elderly care facilities. Why use a bait station instead of a spray, trap, or insecticide dust?Baits work differently from sprays, traps, and insecticide dusts. Baits are targeted to very specific types of bugs, which are attracted to the bait because they think it’s food. Only certain insects can be controlled with baits - ants and roaches are the most common. Ants eat bait, and also collect it to take back to the nest and feed it to the rest of the colony. Baits need more time to work than sprays, but will usually give the most lasting results against ants and roaches, especially if the colony or nest is well-established and you have a lot of ants or roaches to deal with. Bait can be inside a bait station, like No Spill Ant Kill, or in a tube or bottle, and can be in gel, syrup, liquid, paste or granular form. Congratulations! You’ve purchased one of the most effective mineral-based ant killers on the market! These bait stations seem simple enough to use at first glance, but there are five fundamentals you’ll want to keep in mind as you get to work placing them, to help with controlling ants in the house. Let’s get started.1. Track down the problem. Look for ant trails in your home and place your No Spill Ant Kill stations as close to them as possible.Ants have predictable, specific feeding and social habits. As you may know, there is a class of ants that does all the heavy lifting and scouting out for food: the foraging worker ants.In the spring, more than any other time of the year, these workers are on the lookout for food as the colony is under construction. During this time, the queen’s up-and-coming pupae ants are needing nourishment (protein and sugar, depending on the ant species) so they can grow. How does ant bait gel, like Maggie’s Farm No Spill Ant Kill work? Spraying the heck out of any and every intruding ant you see might sound tempting, but that's a bad move. You want to kill off the entire colony, not just the visible individual ants as you spot them. If you kill all the foraging worker ants off as soon as you spot them, there won’t be any left to take the bait back to the colony to feed everyone else. Sprays also deter ants from getting to the bait if sprayed close to the bait placement. And there will be a new wave of ants foraging in your home before you know it.Maggie's Farm has got you covered! Our No Spill Ant Kill bait stations contain specific food attractants that ants love. You’ll want to place them in spots that attract foraging worker ants. So, where to put the ant bait? Placement location is important. For starters, first remove/wipe up any possible food sources for the ants (crumbs, soft drink and jelly spills, etc.). As much as ants like No Spill Ant Kill gel bait, if they have other food options, they may go for them first.Peel the sticker cover off the back of each station, and strategically place the stations anywhere you may have noticed ant activity. No Spill Ant Kill with borax is not harmful to humans or animals when used as directed. As with all pest control products, keep away from children and pets.It will be most effective if you use several spread out bait station placements rather than fewer, larger, clustered placements.Common areas for ant activity include:Window sillsAround tubs and sinks (areas with moisture)Under food cabinets and appliancesAlong baseboardsAround floor edges and in corners2. Perimeter Defense: Place bait stations around the perimeter of your home.Invading ants often nest outdoors, but they still need nourishment. As worker ants forage for food and moisture for themselves and the rest of their colony, they will inevitably find their way around or into your home.Ants typically follow specific trails between their nests and food or water sources, so make note of where you see their trails. Placing No Spill Ant Kill stations near their trails will significantly improve control.Set up a perimeter line of defense around your home or business, near the foundation. Place stations as often as every 5 to 10 feet around the perimeter, focusing on potential entry points.Avoid placement near surface waters.3. Give the bait enough time to work. It usually takes at least several days to start seeing results from any ant bait. The larger the ant colony, the longer it will take to eliminate it. Baiting, though it takes longer, will normally be a more effective option against ants than spraying them with a repellent insecticide. A little patience goes a long way.Baits, by design, will obviously attract ants, so don’t worry when you see more of them around the No Spill Ant Kill stations. That just means that bait is doing its job! After the gel bait attracts foraging worker ants, they will leave a pheromone trail so that they and other workers can find it later. When other foraging worker ants discover the trail, they know it leads to food, and will flock to it. Hence, you will likely see clusters of ants around the stations.Borax, the active ingredient in Maggie’s Farm No Spill Ant Kill, is not fast acting, but it is lethal for ants, and within a few days it will kill them off after they’ve consumed the bait. But it won’t kill them before they’ve been able to take the bait back to their colony to share with their fellow ants. This is great news, as the workers will be able to share the bait with hundreds, even thousands, of fellow ants!Worker ants need time to locate the bait and to make several trips back their colony to share it with the rest of the colony. It usually takes anywhere from 48 hours up to a week for a bait to run its course, depending on the size of the colony.Ants will initially feed on the bait in large numbers and then disappear. If you are not seeing increased ant activity near the bait stations, you may not have placed them where the workers can find it. Check again to see where ants are traveling, and also near sinks, tubs, and even your dishwasher. If you see ants avoiding your stations, it means that they're more intrigued by another source of food. Don't be alarmed. They're just not hungry right now for what you're serving! See if you can’t find the food that the ants are going for, and throw it away or wipe it up. When you remove their other food options, they will go for the bait.4. Do NOT use bug sprays on or around bait stations.Be careful NOT to place bait stations on or near places where you've sprayed an insecticide product. Do NOT spray near the stations once placed. This will drive ants away and defeat the purpose of the bait stations.5. Watch the bait stations and replace as needed. It is important to check your bait stations regularly to ensure there is always moist bait in them.If ants consume all the gel bait, replace the station as soon as possible. If the bait gel crystalizes (hardens) in the station, add a couple of drops of water to the gel to re-hydrate it.Heavy ant infestations may need several bait station replacements. So, there you have it.
