Can Pests Transmit COVID-19?

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, there are many questions and concerns. All of us are wondering how the virus is transferred and what they can do to stay safe. Some bugs are known to carry and transmit diseases. We’ve gathered information about the virus and whether pests can transmit it.

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19

COVID-19 is the abbreviation used for the novel coronavirus disease 2019. It is a part of a larger family of coronaviruses. The common cold and flu are illnesses that come from this family of viruses. However, COVID-19 is more serious than your typical cold. While most cases are mild, the virus can be fatal. The elderly and individuals with underlying medical conditions have a higher risk of experiencing a more severe illness. The symptoms are similar to the flu and include a fever, dry cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Coronaviruses can affect both humans and animals. Though it is rare, these viruses can be transferred from animals to humans. The exact source of COVID-19 has not been identified. However, it is suspected that the virus was transferred from an animal to a human. However, pets, like dogs and cats, have not been linked in any way to the disease. The CDC does not believe COVID-19 can be transmitted by pets.

Can Pests Transmit COVID-19?

Mosquito

Mosquitoes and ticks feed on blood to survive. Humans and animals become hosts for these pests. Mosquitoes are known to be carriers of Zika virus, West Nile virus, and malaria. Ticks are responsible for carrying Lyme disease. When these pests bite, they can transfer pathogens to the host. These pathogens can result in the host contracting these serious diseases. While they are known to be transmitters of disease, they have not been cited as a carrier of COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), no data suggests that pests can transmit the virus.

How is COVID-19 Transmitted?

Hand Washing

Though more research is being conducted, it is known that COVID-19 is spreading through human-to-human contact. It is believed that exposure to contaminated body fluids can result in individuals contracting COVID-19. There are several precautions we can take to prevent the spread of the virus. Washing your hands frequently with soap and water is extremely important. Practicing social distancing can also help in limiting the spread of COVID-19. This means staying at least 6 feet away from others. If it is possible, staying home is also a great way to prevent the disease from being transferred.

With all of the uncertainty, we hope we were able to clear up some common concerns. Thankfully, COVID-19 does not appear to be transmitted through pests. Remember to take the necessary precautions and do your part to fight this virus. It is important to remember that the facts and data regarding COVID-19 are changing daily.
