While most bugs tend to be more of a nuisance than dangerous, some bugs do pose threats. Whether their bites are venomous or they attack in groups, there are bugs you don’t want to upset. To add to the spookiness of the season, we’ve made a list of some of the most dangerous creepy crawlies.
Brown Recluse Spiders
Brown recluse spiders are known for their dark violin-shaped marking. Their bites are venomous but you may not notice symptoms right away. The area around the bite will turn red and muscle pain, nausea, and fever may follow. There have even been cases when bites have led to tissue damage. Thankfully, most bites aren’t this severe and will fade on their own. That being said, you should still seek medical attention if you get on this spider’s bad side.
Black Widow Spiders
This is definitely an infamous spider, and it’s easy to see why. These shiny, black spiders can be a little frightening. Black widows have a distinct red marking that’s shaped like an hourglass. They are one of the most toxic spiders in the United States. Bites are painful and can cause redness, swelling, nausea, and even difficulty breathing. While their bites aren’t usually fatal, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately after being bitten.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes probably aren’t your first thought when it comes to dangerous bugs. Yes, they cause itchy bites, but they don’t seem very intimidating. Unfortunately, mosquitoes carry a secret with them. Several species of mosquitoes are known carriers of diseases. When they bite, they don’t just leave you with a red bump. They also have the ability to transfer any disease they are carrying to the victim.
Brazilian Wandering Spiders
Another spider has managed to crawl its way on to the list. These hairy spiders come with a pair of scary red fangs. Their venom is more toxic than the black widow spider. Bites are painful and can affect your blood pressure. While bites have been fatal, this is rare and can be avoided with proper medical attention. If you’re in South or Central America, keep your eyes open for this wandering spider.
Asian Hornets
With a nickname like murder hornets, it’s no surprise this black and orange hornet made the list. They’re called murder hornets because of their deadly attacks. Asian hornets target honeybees and are able to wipe out an entire colony in just a few minutes. They have been known to attack humans who get too close. Their venom is very powerful and while one sting isn’t a serious problem, multiple stings can be deadly.
Puss Caterpillars
This furry caterpillar may look cuddly, but you don’t want to give it a hug. The puss caterpillar is one of the most venomous caterpillars in the United States. Toxic spines are hidden behind the caterpillar’s hair. When these spines attach to your skin, it can cause pain that’s worse than a bee sting. The pain level will vary depending on the number of spines in your skin. Remember, it may be named after a cat, but it shouldn’t be pet like one.
Africanized Bees
The Africanized bee is commonly referred to as the killer bee, which is why it had to make the list. These hybrid bees are a little deceiving because they look like smaller versions of the domestic honeybee. While their venom isn’t different from a normal bee, they are much more aggressive. They won’t back down from a fight and they have been known to chase after people they see as a threat. To make things worse, they usually attack as a group.
Bullet Ants
Though last on the list, the bullet ant is certainly not least. Bullet ants get their name from their extremely painful bite. Those who have gotten too close to the ant have compared the pain to a gunshot wound. If that wasn’t bad enough, this pain has been known to last up to twenty-four hours. If you’re hiking through rainforests in South America, be sure to give this ant plenty of space.
