6 Ways to Control Mosquitoes at Outdoor Weddings

Outdoor venues are popular choices for weddings. While they are a great option, they can pose challenges including uninvited guests. Mosquitoes aren’t afraid to show up at your wedding unannounced. Thankfully, there are things you can do to help keep these pests away from you and your guests. We’ve made a list of tips to help prevent mosquitoes from crashing your wedding.

1. Think About Timing

Many weddings take place in the evening. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are most active around dusk and in the early morning. If possible, plan your festivities around their activity. These pests are less active in the afternoon. If you can’t imagine not having an evening wedding, be sure to take measures to bug-proof the space.

2. Pay Attention to Your Venue

Finding a venue is an important part of the wedding planning process. When considering your options, check for mosquito attractants. Mosquitoes are attracted to bodies of standing water. If the venue has a pond, you don’t want to set up close to it. You’ll also want to check for overgrown vegetation and tall grass where mosquitoes like to hide. If you’re having a backyard wedding, take time to clean up your yard. Trim vegetation and remove standing water.

3. Choose Mosquito-Repelling Flowers

Chrysanthemums

While flowers are great for decorative purposes, they can also help to deter mosquitoes. Some plant fragrances naturally repel bugs. Chrysanthemums, lavender, marigolds, and lantana are known to help keep mosquitoes away. Try adding a few mosquito-repelling flowers to your bouquet, centerpieces, and other flower arrangements.

4. Use Fans

Fan

Outdoor fans can help keep mosquitoes at bay. These pesky bugs aren’t the best fliers. They struggle to maneuver in windy situations. Place a few fans throughout the venue. A low setting will help to discourage mosquitoes from flying around without disrupting the fun. Plus, they can help keep your guests cool on a warm summer day.

5. Use a Bug Spray

Natural Insect Repellent

Applying a bug spray can help to keep mosquitoes from bugging you. Our Natural Insect Repellent repels mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. You can set out bottles for your guests to use before the ceremony and throughout the reception. It can be applied every two hours or as needed to help ensure your guests don’t walk away with bug bites.

6. Spray the Space

Mosquito & Tick Killer

If your wedding is on your property, you can spray the space before the big day. Our plant-based Mosquito & Tick Killer spray kills mosquitoes on contact. It also has repellent properties that act as a barrier helping to deter mosquitoes. Since it’s formulated with natural plant oils, it’s a more friendly option for your family and the environment. You can spray your lawn a few days before your wedding. If your venue isn’t on your property, talk to the vendor about what measures they take to control pests.
