Spring marks the beginning of bug season. As spring pests emerge, there’s a chance you’ll find them hanging out in your yard and home. Taking the time to bug-proof your space can help to prevent an infestation. We’ve made a list of five tips to help keep bugs away from you this spring.
1. Seal Entry Points
Sealing entry points can stop bugs in their track. Examine your house for potential entry points. Check near doors, windows, the roof, and your home’s foundation. Pests can also enter through cracks in fireplaces. Utility lines often create small holes that pests can squeeze through. Seal holes near these wires and pipes. Don’t forget to check your window and door screens for tears.
2. Clean Your Home & Yard
Giving your space a good cleaning can help to prevent bugs. Clean floors and counters to remove crumbs and spills. Take your trash out regularly and make sure lids fit tightly. Clutter can provide bugs with shelter, so get rid of items you don’t need anymore. Cockroaches and other pests like hiding in cardboard boxes, so store items in plastic bins instead. Keep your yard clean too. Trim vegetation so it’s not touching the side of your house. Remove yard debris that can serve as shelter and food for bugs.
3. Use Green Pest Control Products
Spraying the perimeter of your yard with a plant-based insecticide spray can help deter pests. Our Yard Bug Spray not only kills pests on contact, but it also repels them. You can create a protective barrier that helps to keep bugs out. You can also spray common entry points with our Home Bug Spray. Its residual properties will help to prevent bugs from entering your home. To prevent an invading ant army, you can place our No Spill Ant Kill bait stations in areas where you are likely to find ants. Common spots include near doors and windows.
4. Reduce Moisture
Moisture is one of the main attractants of pests. Examine the interior and exterior of your home for moisture build-up. Ensure your gutters and downspouts are working properly. Make sure items, like toys, gardening supplies, and lawn furniture, aren’t collecting water. Don’t forget to check in your home too. Examine faucets and pipes for leaks. You’ll also want to make sure your tub, shower, and toilet aren’t leaking.
5. Change Your Lights
Some pests, like flies, are attracted to lights. Bugs are more attracted to white light bulbs because they have a cooler tone. Swap your white bulbs for warm-hued bulbs since these are less attractive to pests. To reduce the amount of light in your yard, consider installing motion detector lights. At night, close your blinds and curtains to help reduce light.
Bugs don’t make the best roommates, which is why you’ll want to pest-proof your home. Taking the time to implement the above preventative techniques can help keep bugs away.
