Frequently Asked Questions

The Maggie’s Farm product line kills and controls a wide variety of crawling and flying insects. The Maggie’s Farm products fall into three distinct product categories:

· Household Pests (insects typically found inside a home)

· Lawn & Garden Pests (insects typically found outside a home)

· Mosquito products (specifically formulated for outdoor mosquito protection)

Check the individual Maggie’s Farm product labels for a list of the insects that the product is designed to kill and control.  Each product is specially formulated to control the insects listed on the label, and the sprayers and actuators on the liquid products were selected to provide the optimum spray pattern to provide effective kill and control.

You can purchase products on this website (go to the “Our Products” section, then to the specific Maggie’s Farm product page you are interested in and click “Add to Cart”). Or if you want to find a store in your area that sells the product, click on the “Find a Store” button on that same product page. Simply type in your zip code and the distance you are willing to drive, click the box next to the product you are looking for and then click the “Search” button.

The natural plant oils we use in many of our products are mostly all inherently fragrant, which include cinnamon, peppermint, wintergreen, rosemary, lemongrass, and clove. These same plant oils are commonly used in other consumer products for fragrance purposes. We formulate our products to make the fragrance as pleasant, soft, and non-lingering as possible, but we know some people are sensitive to fragrances. Therefore, we recommend testing the product in a small area before using over a larger area indoors.

The fragrance comes from the natural plant oils used in the ingredients, which are inherently fragrant. The fragrance generally dissipates shortly after product use. However, the "longevity" of the fragrance is a function of several factors, including: how much product was used, where the product was used, if the product was applied to any absorbent surfaces (e.g., carpet, upholstery, etc.), the relative humidity in the area sprayed, the amount of air circulation in the area sprayed, etc.

If you find that the fragrance is too strong and/or lingers too long, there are several things you can do to minimize it:

 1. Ventilate the room. Open up the windows and use fans to circulate the air.

 2. Clean up any excess material. Wipe up excess residues on hard surfaces. Use absorbent materials (recommend baking soda products such as Arm & Hammer® Odor Eliminator for Carpet & Room, Glade® Carpet & Room, etc.) to pull up remaining product on carpet, fabric, and upholstery.

 3. If fragrance is still troublesome, try using either an enzymatic product (Woolite® Pet Oxygen Odor and Stain Remover, Out® Stain & Odor Remover, and Endust® Floor Care Pet Solutions) or an odor-counteracting product (Febreze® and other products containing beta-cyclodextrin). Follow instructions on the product label and allow enough time for odor removal. Vacuum up excess material after application. Repeat application if fragrance is persistent.

4. Clean the area with detergent and water as a final step to remove any remaining residues.

No, our indoor spray products are water-based, not oil-based, so they do not leave behind a messy oily residue that must be wiped up after spraying. Oil-based sprays can also cause staining issues on soft surfaces like fabrics, upholstery, rugs, carpet, and leather. And while our water-based sprays will not cause hard floor surfaces like hardwood and tile floors to become extremely slippery like an oil-based spray, we do recommend to wipe away any excess spray to prevent any possible slipping.

Since our indoor products are water-based, not oil-based, they are less likely to cause any staining problems. While we have tested our indoor products on many types of surfaces and materials, we cannot possibly check them all. It is always wise to test them in an inconspicuous place on your carpet, fabric or other surface to check for staining before using. It is also a good idea to wipe away any excess product after use to reduce the chance of staining even further.

Our liquid products and aerosols are formulated using natural plant oils as the active ingredients in a water-based formula. Water tends to separate from oil. Because of this, shaking the product well before application will ensure that all of the ingredients are mixed together.

Any insecticide sprayed directly on a beneficial insect will probably kill it, but the real problem associated with the death of beneficial insects and insecticide use has to do with the residue left behind wherever the insecticide was sprayed/applied. Even well-intentioned people who use conventional insecticides to control insect pests, but not on beneficial insects, could have an adverse impact on them due to the residual killing properties of the insecticides they are using.

Conversely, Maggie's Farm sprays are very repellent to insects (due to the plant oils used as the active ingredients). So the residues left behind from these Maggie's Farm products are significantly less impactful on beneficial insects, since our products will simply repel them, but not kill them. Additionally, Maggie's Farm bait products do not pose any threats to beneficial insects since they are not attractive to pollinators, are not applied in the areas where pollinators feed (flowering plant tops) and are applied in very small amounts.

The only Maggie’s Farm product labeled for use on skin and clothes is the Natural* Insect Repellent. You should not use any other Maggie’s Farm product as a personal mosquito repellent.

*Naturally sourced ingredients

Except for the Maggie’s Farm Beetle & Boxelder Bug Killer and Vegetable Garden Insect & Disease Control, all other Maggie's Farm outdoor products can be used around lakes, ponds, streams, and other bodies of water since the plant oils used as the active ingredients do not persist in the soil and break down relatively quickly in water (up to 48 hours). Our products have dramatically lower potential for toxicity to fish versus many common synthetic pesticides. That being said, our products are not labeled (and therefore should not be used) for direct applications to water.  The Beetle & Boxelder Bug Killer product uses natural pyrethrins as the active ingredient, which can be toxic to fish. It should not be applied directly to or near water, storm drains or drainage ditches.

The best Maggie's Farm product to control fleas outdoors (yard and perimeter of house) would be the Yard Bug Spray which attaches directly to your garden hose. For indoors, our Bed Bug & Flea Killer, Home Bug Spray or Ant & Roach Killer would work best. Just follow the label instructions of whichever product you use. Our two dust products – Bed Bug Killer and Spider & Insect Dust – will also kill fleas and provide longer residual activity.

Keep in mind that most insecticides, including Maggie's Farm, only work against 2 of the 4 stages of a flea's lifecycle (adult and larva stages). Because fleas are protected from insecticides in their egg and pupal stages, follow-up applications will be necessary to kill the fleas as they emerge from these protected stages. Visit our Pest Help section for more information.

You can use the Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray to kill the silverfish you see and are able to spray directly.  But the best product to use to get rid of a silverfish problem is the Maggie’s Farm Roach Killer Gel Bait. It is also labeled to control silverfish, and the bait will allow the silverfish that consume it to take it back to their nest to eliminate the source of the problem.

Maggie’s Farm products should be stored in a cool, dry area out of the reach of children and pets.

Maggie’s Farm products have a shelf life of 2 years.  There are no expiration dates printed on Maggie’s Farm labels or packaging.

There should be no problem. Depending upon the size of your dog, they would have to eat a large amount of the product to cause any kind of adverse effect. Keep an eye on your dog and if they start acting funny, call your vet and have the label with you.

Maggie’s Farm products provide application instructions, which take into account the amount of material that can safely be used under certain conditions. Our complete line of EPA exempt products are made with plant oils such as rosemary, cinnamon, and peppermint, all of which are classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “minimum risk” and approved as Direct Food Additives or classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Please refer to our Ingredient Glossary.

Some plant oils can be a problem for cats, particularly wintergreen oil. Cats don’t metabolize essential oils the way humans and other mammals do. Using the products judiciously according to the product label should not cause a problem in most circumstances. However, never directly spray cats with plant oil-based products and do not apply them to areas where cats frequent, particularly if they contain wintergreen. If you have a cat with poor health status, we do not recommend using a product containing wintergreen. Maggie’s Farm products which contain wintergreen include Home Bug Spray, Ant & Roach Killer, Spider & Insect Dust, Mosquito Fogger & Yard Bug Spray. Contact us for recommendations.

Maggie’s Farm EPA registered products (insect baits, Bed Bug Dust and Beetle & Boxelder Bug Killer) will not be harmful to pets if used as directed. More information on how to use pesticides safely is provided in EPA’s Citizens Guide below:

www.epa.gov/safepestcontrol/citizens-guide-pest-control-and-pesticide-safety

There is no "official" waiting period advising people/pets to stay off a lawn that was just sprayed with a Maggie’s Farm hose-end product. However, in the spirit of "good safety practices," staying off the lawn until the product dries is recommended.

There is no "official" waiting period for people/pets to leave the house after applying the Maggie’s Farm Ant & Roach Killer, Flying Insect Killer, or Home Bug Spray products. It is important to keep in mind that some individuals may be sensitive to the fragrance of plant essential oils. If the fragrance is too strong and/or lingers too long, refer to the FAQ above about minimizing fragrance. When there is prior knowledge of a sensitivity to fragrance, Maggie’s Farm recommends testing the product in a small area before using over a larger area indoors.

Dispose of an empty bottle or can in the trash, or recycle if available.

While the Maggie’s Farm plant-oil based products are classified as FIFRA 25(b) exempt minimum-risk insecticides, we recommend moving caged bird(s) to a different room from where the product is applied as a precaution since these plant-oil based products have a fragrance that the bird(s) may not like (it is not toxic to them). You can return them to the room sprayed after the fragrance dissipates.

The Maggie’s Farm 3-in-1 Garden Spray works as an insecticide, a miticide and as a fungicide to protect plants from insect pests, mites and fungus. Thus the reason it is referred to as a “3-in-1”.

Like all lawn and garden products, the frequency of application of our lawn and garden products depends on a number of factors, including area of application, type and severity of pest problem, moisture conditions and temperature. The frequency of application information is listed on all of Maggie’s Farm product labels.

A good rule of thumb: one should expect to apply more frequently if applying in larger areas, when the pest problem is severe, after heavy rain, if moisture conditions are high and/or if temperatures are high. It is also important to keep in mind that, unlike synthetic pesticides, the plant oils we use in our products are designed to break down over a short period of time so they do not persist in the environment or leave long-term pesticide residues

Our plant-based products, including Maggie’s Farm 3-in-1 Garden Spray, will kill bees if you spray them directly. If you use this product, or any of our other plant-based spray products, as directed, it will repel bees and other beneficial insects, but not harm or kill them. In other words, don’t spray bees directly, and they should be fine.

Maggie’s Farm 3-in-1 Garden Spray does work on indoor plants, but be careful. Indoor plants are not as hearty as outdoor garden vegetation, so it’s always a good idea to test our products on a small area of the plant before treating to ensure they don’t get burnt (phototoxicity). In fact, we recommend spraying the soil around indoor plants rather than spraying the leaves directly, as they are more delicate than their outdoor counterparts.

Because the 3-in-1 Garden Spray is classified as a minimum-risk pesticide, there is no a harvest interval. You can spray and pick on the same day!

Yes, fruits and vegetables can be eaten after spraying. Just wash them off before eating.

Yes, it can be sprayed on flowers though we recommend you test spray on a small area of the flower before spraying all the flowers to make sure they are not sensitive to the plant oils in the product (to avoid possible plant burn).  It is also best to apply in the evening, not in the heat of the day.

The following factors will impact the amount of time it will take for the ant bait to kill an ant colony:

· Getting the foraging ants to find and feed on the bait – Even with the proper placement of the bait along foraging ant trails, the ants may not immediately go to the bait and begin feeding on it if they already have a food source they are feeding on (if this is the case, need to find and eliminate that food source), or if the species of ant you are dealing with is not currently interested in a sweet/sugary food source (which the Maggie’s Farm No Spill Ant Kill and Ant Killer Bait products are).  Ant species that do not show interest in sweet/sugary foods are typically looking for protein food sources in the spring when they are building their colonies.  The Maggie’s Farm Roach Killer Gel Bait (that also works great on ants) is a protein-based bait that may work in this scenerio.

· The size of the ant colony - Once the foraging ants feed on the bait and return to the colony to share with other ants in the colony, the length of time it will take to eliminate the colony depends on the size of the colony itself.  The larger the colony, the longer it will take.  Though you should start seeing fewer ants until the colony is eliminated.

It attracts and kills all common household ants except carpenter ants, fire ants and harvester ants.

The Maggie’s Farm Ant Killer bait contains a variety of food attractants designed to attract foraging ants to it. Worker ants feed on the bait and take it back to the nest to share with the rest of the colony, which eventually will kill the colony. So not only is it normal to see more ants after you apply the Ant Killer bait, it is also a sign that the bait is working. Over a short period of time you should see fewer ants, and eventually no ants, once the bait has been spread to all the ants in the nest.

It is important that you DO NOT USE any insecticide sprays around the bait placements as you don’t want to do anything that prevents the ants from taking the bait. The goal is to eliminate the source of the ant problem, the nest. So you want the foraging ants to take the bait back to the nest to eliminate the colony.

Our research and testing has shown that various plant oils work better on certain groups of insects. We wanted our Maggie’s Farm Ant & Roach Killer to be effective on a wide variety of crawling insects, not just ants and roaches, so we utilize several plant oils as the active ingredient for that reason. Additionally, we have found the combination of certain plant oils in specific ratios provides a “synergistic effect” that enhances the overall efficacy of the product.

These ingredients are used as emulsifiers to help the oil and water in the formula to mix together well when the can is shaken to get an even, uniform mixture that is needed for product performance.  Without these ingredients, the oil and water would remain separated (oil floats, water sinks), which compromises the effectiveness of the product. These ingredients are on the US EPA Minimum Risk Pesticide Program approved list of ingredients.

Trying to control ants in your home can be a challenge if you do not have the right ant spray. Our formula works best if you can apply the ant spray to the entry points, around the perimeter of the home and also directly on the ants and their trails. To help with killing existing ants in your home, use our ant bait gel.

Maggie’s Farm Ant & Roach Killer is classified by the US EPA as a minimum-risk pesticide (see link: www.epa.gov/minimum-risk-pesticides).

The Ant & Roach Killer is designed to kill fast. The repellency of our plant oils will also help to keep insects away for a short period of time after applying. We have seen residual effectiveness with Ant & Roach Killer in the laboratory for two weeks.

Because the Maggie’s Farm plant essential oil-based products provide residual repellency protection, they are ideal for use to help prevent pest problems.  Apply the Ant & Roach Killer aerosol in and around all potential insect entry points around the exterior of your house (i.e. cracks/gaps around windows, door frames, utility lines/ pipes, vents/weep holes, foundation cracks, under siding, etc.).  Reapply every few weeks or as needed.

No, our indoor spray products are water-based, not oil-based sprays, so they do not leave behind a messy oily residue that must be wiped up after spraying. Our water-based sprays will not cause hard floor surfaces like hardwood and tile floors to become slippery like an oil-based spray. Oil-based sprays can also cause staining issues on soft surfaces like fabrics, upholstery, rugs, carpet, and leather.

No, Ant & Roach Killer is not labeled for use on plants.

A little goes a long way. You want to focus on treating the cracks and crevices of the bed frame and nightstand, and the tufts and seams of the mattress and box springs, and any really small areas where bed bugs may hide. It is best to apply the dust using a small brush. Pour some dust into a small cup, dip the end of the brush into the dust, and apply.

No, you do not need to vacuum up Bed Bug Killer. It will keep working until it is removed.

Yes, you certainly can treat for any indoor pest yourself, but the effectiveness of your treatment will depend on the size of the existing infestation, as well as how well you treat areas where indoor pests may be hiding out and living.

The most effective long-term approach to get rid of bed bugs at home is to thoroughly treat areas where bed bugs have been detected, typically a bedroom, including the mattress/box springs, bed frame, headboard, nearby furniture, floorboards, etc. with a desiccant insecticide dust, like our Maggie’s Farm Simply Effective Bed Bug Killer. Maggie’s Farm Bed Bug Killer is a naturally derived desiccant insecticide dust, tested and proven to be extremely effective (kills within 24 hours of contact). Focus your application into tiny cracks and crevices in your bedroom furniture, wall voids, behind electrical plates, and other out-of-the-way areas.

For the very best results, remove your bedding, wash and dry it thoroughly at the highest heat setting. Take apart your bed frame, nearby furniture, etc. to get the best exposure for application. It is very important to follow the label directions carefully and to use Maggie’s Farm Bed Bug Killer dust sparingly. See our full dust application guide here.

Depending on the size of the infestation, you might need to repeat treatment, possibly more than once. If you feel like you’re outmatched, it might be time to call a pest control professional.

Yes, it can be used to control and prevent a wide range of crawling insects including ants, cockroaches, fleas, firebrats, silverfish, spiders, ticks and mites.  Just read and follow the label directions on how and where to apply the Bed Bug Dust to control these other crawling insects.

Yes, the Bed Bug Killer dust can be used around pets. It is labeled for use in kennels and on pet bedding and rest areas. Just avoid over-applying the product.

Yes, it will kill adult bed bugs and their eggs.

Pyrethrins are found naturally in chrysanthemum flowers.

Yes, it can be used on houseplants.

The Flying Insect Killer can be used both indoors and outdoors. Spray the pesky flies, gnats, mosquitoes and moths directly (for best results spray them when they are resting). Because Flying Insect Killer is water-based, it will not leave behind a messy, oily residue. Do not apply to plants, pets, people or clothing.

These ingredients are on the US EPA Minimum Risk Pesticide Program approved list of ingredients. Maggie’s Farm Flying Insect Killer is classified by the U.S. EPA as a minimum-risk pesticide.

Flying Insect Killer is not meant for use on plants. We do however carry a product called 3-in-1 Garden Spray that you can use. We suggest to always test in a small area before broad use and to read the entire label of any product you choose to use.

Our plant-based products will kill bees if you spray them directly. If you use Maggie’s Farm Flying Insect Killer (or any other of our plant-based products) as directed, it will repel bees and other beneficial insects, rather than kill them with direct contact. In other words, don’t spray them directly, and they should be fine.

While most fruit fly traps only use a liquid attractant, Maggie’s Farm Fruit Fly Traps use a dual tablet and liquid attraction system that works to attract fruit flies faster.

Unlike other fruit fly traps on the market, the Maggie’s Farm Fruit Fly Trap has a glue surface inside the trap that better secures the trapped flies and prevents them from escaping.

No, Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray is not labeled for topical use.

Yes, the nozzle has both a “SPRAY” and a “STREAM” setting.  While the nozzle only has “ON” printed on it, simply turn it to one of the “ON” positions for a spray setting, and the other “ON” position for a stream setting.

You cannot spray onto food or food prep areas. If you do, clean area or discard food. Do not apply to plants. It is not for topical use for you or your pets. Do not spray directly on people or pets. Do not spray around insect baits that are being used. Always test on fabrics and plastic surfaces before using across a broad area. Our Home Bugs Spray is a great indoor bug spray, for all your home pest control needs.

That depends on if you are fighting a current infestation or if you are being preemptive. I suggest every 2 weeks to once a month as a preventative, or as needed. As long as you are ok with the fragrance of the natural plant oils and test on surfaces before use, feel free to use it as much or as little as needed.

This product is not labeled for use on plants. We suggest our 3-in-1 Garden Spray. If you decide to use it, make sure to test a small area before broadly spraying over the whole plants, and read all of the label's instructions.

The first turn can be difficult, but you can use a pair of pliers to get a good grip on it and twist it either way. There are 2 off positions, 1 mist spray position, and 1 stream spray position.

Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray is an excellent go-to for home pest control. It is formulated using natural plant oils and kills the most common home-invading pests including ants (also carpenter ants), bed bugs, cockroaches, fleas, mosquitoes, spiders, ticks, and other crawling and flying pests. The residual then repels other pests who come near it.

Because the Maggie’s Farm plant oil-based products provide residual repellency protection, they are ideal for use to help prevent pest problems. Apply Home Bug Spray in and around all potential insect entry points around the exterior of your house (i.e. cracks/gaps around windows, door frames, utility lines/ pipes, vents/weep holes, foundation cracks, under siding, etc.). Reapply every few weeks or as needed.

No. Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray is labeled for bed bug adults, but not adult eggs. Many insecticides are labeled as such (for adults, and not for eggs). Vacuuming or going through the washer and dryer on high heat are the most effective treatments for bed bug eggs.

For a spot treatment to kill bed bugs, apply Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray or Maggie’s Farm Ant & Roach Killer in bedrooms/sleeping areas by using the straight stream nozzle setting to inject the product in cracks around baseboards, floorboards, doors, and window frames.

Use the “mist” nozzle settings to apply as a surface spray to carpets, floor coverings, and rugs around sleeping areas. Spray until damp, but not soaked.

Keep in mind that to use any spray as a bed bug treatment, it will require several applications. Any bed bugs that you don’t kill directly by spraying them will only be repelled by the plant oils in Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray.

Your best bet is to treat these same crack/crevice/void areas and the mattress/bed frame/headboard with unscented Maggie’s Farm Bed Bug Killer.

Bed bugs are most commonly found in bedrooms and furniture near where host humans sleep. The most effective long-term approach to get rid of bed bugs at home is to treat your mattress, bed frame, headboard, nearby furniture, floorboards, etc. in areas near your bed. Bed Bugs are stealthy and sneaky and can easily cram themselves into tiny cracks, crevices, wall voids, and other out-of-the-way areas, so this is where you’ll want to focus your application.

Our Maggie’s Farm Simply Effective Bed Bug Killer is proven to be an even more effective desiccant (dehydrating) dust than diatomaceous earth, and when left undisturbed, remains effective for up to 10 years.

For best results, remove bedding, wash and dry it thoroughly in high heat, and vacuum carpeting, rugs, and the mattress/box spring thoroughly.  Place the vacuum bag in a plastic bag, seal it and throw away in an outdoor garbage can. Also, take your bed frame, nearby furniture, and electrical plates apart to get the best exposure for application.

See our Maggie’s Farm Bed Bug management guide here and our Bed Bug Killer application guide here

No, our indoor spray products are water-based, not oil-based, so they do not leave behind a messy oily residue that must be wiped up after spraying. Our water-based sprays will not cause hard floor surfaces like hardwood and tile floors to become slippery like an oil-based spray. Oil-based sprays can also cause staining issues on soft surfaces like fabrics, upholstery, rugs, carpet, and leather.

The Mosquito Fogger is best used to protect small gathering areas such as a deck or patio, versus an entire back yard. We recommend using our Maggie’s Farm Mosquito & Tick Killer hose-end sprayer for your backyard bug control if you have a larger backyard applications, as it will treat up to 5000 square feet.

Yes, the Mosquito Fogger should be sprayed around the outer edges of the area that need mosquito protection.  If there are plants close by, you should also spray them from about 3 feet away (plant leaves, in dense foliage).  If protecting around a deck, spray under the deck too and in any dark/humid areas where mosquitoes tend to rest. Give the Mosquito Fogger a few minutes to take effect.

It depends on what types of active ingredients are used in the fogger formulation. Most professional foggers will have some type of contact insecticide and will recommend you wear a respirator during application.

There are mosquito foggers formulated with natural plant oils that act as both a mosquito killer and repellent, so you get the benefits of both efficacy and a family-friendly product.

Like all lawn and garden products, the frequency of application of our lawn and garden products depends on a number of factors, including area of application, type and severity of pest problem, moisture conditions and temperature. The frequency of application information is listed on all of Maggie’s Farm product labels. In general, re-apply about every 4 weeks, or sooner if needed.

A good rule of thumb: one should expect to apply more frequently if applying in larger areas, when the pest problem is severe, after heavy rain, if moisture conditions are high and/or if temperatures are high. It is also important to keep in mind that, unlike synthetic pesticides, the plant oils we use in our products are designed to break down over a short period of time so they do not persist in the environment or leave long-term pesticide residues.

There is no "official" waiting period advising people/pets to stay off a lawn that was just sprayed with a Maggie’s Farm hose-end product. However, in the spirit of "good safety practices," staying off the lawn until the product dries is recommended.

If you are wanting to apply the Mosquito & Tick Killer Spray for just ticks then you will typically concentrate on the taller brush and sides of home, and fences.  Treat those areas with the spray about 3 feet up where ticks are typically resting and waiting to brush onto you or your pet. Make sure when you are applying this product as a tick spray for the yard to get good coverage.

Maggie’s Farm Mosquito & Tick Killer is not labeled for controlling fleas. Our Maggie’s Farm Yard Bug Spray is a much more effective flea killer. For lawn pests, spray in a slow, sweeping motion, as you walk backward, overlapping the spray to thoroughly cover target areas (focus first on the areas your pets frequent most). For indoor flea treatments, use Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray and follow label directions.

Yes, our Natural* Insect Repellent is labeled for use on animals such as dogs, horses, and other animals, but cannot be used on cats, birds, or reptiles (as these animals are more sensitive to the plant oils in the product). As with any repellent product, it is important to follow the label's "Directions for Use" carefully.

*Naturally sourced ingredients

We recommend reapplying it every 2 hours or as needed.

*Naturally sourced ingredients

We’ve formulated a DEET-FREE (not a safety claim) alternative to conventional insect repellents using these plant oils as the active ingredients: corn oil*, soybean oil*, geraniol, lemongrass oil*, citronella oil*, and clove oil*, which all work very well at killing and repelling many kinds of bugs! The inert ingredients include isopropyl alcohol, glycerin, hemp seed oil, Vitamin E, and nitrogen (propellant).

See the Maggie’s Farm Natural* Insect Repellent label for a full list of active and inert ingredients.

*Naturally sourced ingredients

Yes! Maggie’s Farm Simply Effective Natural* Insect Repellent is designed mainly to kill and repel mosquitoes, but it is also effective against ticks and flies. It is intended to be used as a personal insect repellent, but not as a surface or area spray. Apply to skin (arms, legs, neck, face, etc.) as the label recommends. It is also labeled for use on dogs, horses, and other animals, excluding cats, birds, and reptiles.

If you are looking for an effective yard/area spray to use to control flying insects outdoors, we recommend our Maggie’s Farm Mosquito Fogger, Maggies’s Farm Yard Bug Spray, Maggie’s Farm Mosquito & Tick Killer, and our Maggie’s Farm Flying Insect Killer. For indoor use, we recommend Flying Insect Killer and our Maggie’s Farm Home Bug Spray.

*Naturally sourced ingredients

Our products have a two-year shelf life after the manufacturing date. If you provide us with the batch number found on the bottom of the can, we can let you know when it was formulated and packaged.

The patent-pending No Spill Ant Kill bait station is the only moist bait station on the market that uses a rigid gel formula with no potential for spill, so you get all the advantages of liquid bait with none of the mess. Ants can feed over the whole surface without drowning in the bait and more ants can feed at one time and take the bait back to the colony.

See a video about No Spill Ant Kill here.

No Spill Ant Kill contains ingredients that attract foraging ants to the bait station, where they take the bait product back to their nest to deliver it to the rest of the colony and eliminate it. You want to see ants enter and exit the bait station with the bait for it to be most effective, so it is important not to spray any ants, or areas, around the bait stations. The objective of ant bait is not just to kill the ants that take the bait, but to get them to take the bait back to the nest to get rid of the source of the ant problem – the nest.

It attracts and kills all common household ants except carpenter ants, fire ants and harvester ants.

The Maggie’s Farm Roach Killer Gel Bait (that also works great on ants) is a protein-based bait that may work in this scenario.

No, the foil cover on top of the No Spill Ant Kill bait station is not to be removed. It helps to keep the gel bait fresh and soft...and more attractive to ants. You should only remove the green sticker on the bottom of the station that covers the hole that the ants will use to enter and exit the bait station.

Seeing ants near the No Spill Ant Kill station is a good thing. This means that the product is working. It is designed to lure ants to the product with its sweet ant bait. It also has moisture which all ants need. The ants eat the bait and take it back to their nests where they share it with the rest of the colony. This will help eliminate the entire colony.

The stations are working when you observe the following:

  • Initially when you notice an increase in the number of ants going into and out of the station (to take the bait back to the nest)
  • The number of ants around the station will gradually decline (the bait is killing off the ants in the nest)
  • You no longer see any ants in or around the station (the nest has been eliminated)

Place the bait stations in areas inaccessible to children and pets, close to where you see ant activity. Ants often trail along structural edges and will seek out moisture and food. Bait around sinks, tubs, window sills, under food cabinets, around floor edges and in corners. Invading ants nest outdoors, so it will help to place bait stations outside close to ant trails and where they are found entering the structure.

It is important that you DO NOT USE any insecticide sprays around the bait placements as you don't want to do anything that prevents the ants from taking the bait. The goal is to eliminate the source of the ant problem, the nest. So you want the ants to take the bait back to the nest to eliminate the colony.

Yes, however, the effectiveness really depends on the proper placement of the stations. If you do not have an ant problem and want to use the station to prevent one, place the station in areas where ants are most likely to enter your home (preferably where you have seen ants enter your home previously). Around doorways, windows, plumbing pipes...these are the most common areas where ants enter a home. Monitor the stations regularly and replace if the gel in the station is gone or dries out (it should remain moist for 60-90 days).

The two main reasons for replacing a No Spill bait station are:

  • When the station is empty (no more gel bait). If the ant population is large, this may happen within a few days.

  • When the gel bait dries out (usually takes 60-90 days).

It is important to monitor No Spill bait stations regularly to determine when they need to be replaced.

No Spill Ant Kill bait stations have a shelf life of 2 years when stored sealed in a cool area.

There are a couple of possible reasons why ants are ignoring a No Spill Ant Kill bait station. First, the ants you are trying to control may already have found a good food source and are not interested in the No Spill bait. Follow the ants/ant trail to the food source they are feeding on and remove it. Once their alternative food source has been removed, the No Spill bait should become their primary food source.

Second, at certain times of the year, some ant species change their feeding habits depending on the needs of the colony. Typically in the spring, many ant species search for protein when they are in brood production mode. In late spring/early summer, many ant species change their feeding habits to sweets when they are foraging for food and building their nest. No Spill is a sweet ant bait so it will be most effective from late spring/early summer through the fall. No Spill also contains moisture which all ants need.

In early spring, when protein is the preferred food source, we recommend using Maggie's Farm Roach Killer gel bait. It is a protein-based bait and is formulated for ants, as well as roaches.

Our No Spill Ant Kill is formulated using food ingredients (to attract the ants) and the borax active is at such a low level that the product has very low toxicity. Your dog should be fine. We do recommend monitoring your dog’s behavior and if you notice anything unusual, contact your vet and have the product label with you.

The stations are placed with the holes facing down.

Maggie’s Farm No Spill Ant Kill stations are not traps and the ants do not get trapped inside. Our No Spill stations are an excellent form of long-term pest control, in that ants are able to enter the stations, consume the bait, and leave to take it back to their colony to share. Depending on how large their ant colony is, the colony, including the queen, will be eliminated. This can take from a couple of days to a couple weeks.

If the ants are still coming, it’s still working. The size of the ant colony will affect how long you will see ants. Typically, it takes a week or two before you will see a significant decline. Larger colonies will take longer to eliminate.

Here are a couple of suggestions regarding what you can do in the meantime:

Check any bait stations you’ve placed to confirm that there is still bait in the station. If not, replace with new stations. If all the bait is gone, that’s a good sign, because ants in the colony have likely ingested it all, and it is killing them off. It’s also a good sign because you’ve found a spot for placement where the ants can find it. Place your replacement bait station(s) in the same spot(s).

If you have not seen a decline in the number of ants in and around the station after one week, put down another station or two close by as you are more than likely dealing with a large colony. Using multiple stations will allow more ants to get to the bait and take it back to the colony.

Something else you can check your bait stations for is to see if the bait has dried out. The bait probably won’t attract many ants if it’s dried out. If it has dried, simply apply a few drops of water to re-hydrate, and the ants will return to feed.

While baits work better at getting rid of ant problems (versus just spraying the ones you see), they take time for the ants to get the bait back to their colony to share with other ants. As hard as it can be, it is important to be patient. You should start seeing fewer ants as bait begins working, and then no ants once it has eliminated the colony.

The gel bait material can crystalize with extended exposure to air. If this happens, just add a couple of drops of water to the gel bait (through the access hole at the bottom of the station) and that will rehydrate the gel bait to make it attractive to the ants again.

Our Roach Killer gel bait contains multiple food attractants to attract cockroaches to it, where they will feed on it, return to their nest, and die within a day or two. What happens next is known as the "domino effect." After they die, other roaches in the nest will consume the dead body, ingesting the toxic active ingredient, and in turn, also die. Baby roaches also consume the feces of adult roaches and can pick up the toxicant this way as well.

If you have a roach infestation, you will continue to see roaches after you use Maggie's Farm Roach Killer until all roaches are affected and dead, though you should see fewer roaches shortly after they start taking the bait. The larger the infestation, the longer it will take to get total control over it, and the more bait placements you will need to make.

It is important that you DO NOT USE any insecticide sprays around the bait placements, as you don't want to do anything that will prevent the roaches from taking the bait. The goal is to kill roaches, not temporarily chase them away. You want the roaches to eat the bait and die.

Maggie’s Farm Roach Killer Gel Bait is a tannish/light brown color, and roaches find our bait irresistible.

Roach Killer Gel Bait does dry out and harden after an extended period of time. When it dries/hardens, roaches won’t be attracted to it, so monitor your gel bait placements and replace as needed.

Our Roach Killer gel formulation is specifically designed and tested to remain attractive to roaches for long periods of time. For faster results, remember to reduce all other food sources in the vicinity of the gel bait placements (crumbs, food scraps, spills, etc.), so that the bait is their only remaining food source.

The Maggie’s Farm Spider & Insect Dust works best when applied in areas where spiders and insects hide or in areas where these pests might enter a building. Areas the dust can be applied include attics, basements, utility closets, along/behind baseboards, under/behind appliances, in drawer wells (space under the bottom drawer in cupboards), in wall voids, in weep holes, and other areas, cracks, and crevices where pests may hide or enter buildings.

The active ingredient is on the dust particles, and when a spider/insect comes in contact with the dust, it attaches to its body and/or legs, allowing the active to get inside and cause the pest to die. Dusts tend to work slower than sprays, but they also last much longer, up to several months.
